Nancy Fichtman Dana

Nancy Fichtman Dana is currently a professor of education and director of the Center for School Improvement at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Under her direction, the Center promotes and supports practitioner inquiry, or action research, as a core mechanism for school improvement in schools throughout the state.

Dana began her career in education as an elementary school teacher in Hannibal Central Schools, NY, and has worked closely with teachers and administrators on action research, building professional learning communities and school-university collaborations in Florida and Pennsylvania since 1990.

In 2008, the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) honored Dana and coauthor Diane Yendol-Hoppey with the 2008 NSDC Staff Development Book of the Year award for The Reflective Educator's Guide to Professional Development: Coaching Inquiry-Oriented Learning Communities (Corwin, 2008). Written for coaches, workshop leaders, and staff developers, this outstanding resource provides strategies, activities, and tools for combining professional learning communities (PLCs) with action research to develop what the authors call "inquiry-oriented learning communities."

Dana is the lead author of the bestseller, The Reflective Educator's Guide to Classroom Research: Learning to Teach and Teaching to Learn Through Practitioner Inquiry, Second Edition (Corwin, 2009) and The Facilitator's Guide to The Reflective Educator's Guide to Classroom Research: Learning to Teach and Teaching to Learn Through Practitioner Inquiry, Second Edition (Corwin, 2009). She is the author of Leading With Passion and Knowledge: The Principal as Action Researcher (Corwin, 2009) and coauthor of The Power of Teacher Networks (Corwin, 2009) and The Reflective Educator's Guide to Mentoring: Strengthening Practice Through Knowledge, Story, and Metaphor (Corwin, 2007). Dana has also written numerous articles focused on teacher inquiry for professional journals.

About the Center for School Improvement

Mission
To support and promote practitioner inquiry as a primary mechanism for school improvement throughout Florida

The Center for School Improvement (CSI) in the College of Education at the University of Florida assists Florida schools in their quest to improve by developing and delivering meaningful professional development programs for teachers and administrators tailored to each school site. The professional development programs offered by CSI advocate for teachers and administrators to take an active role in their own professional growth through the process of practitioner inquiry.

Each year, CSI supports hundreds of teachers and administrators as they study their own schools and classroom practices and develop action plans for change based on outcomes from their studies. CSI teaches the process of practitioner inquiry and supports practitioners throughout the entire school year as they engage in their own research, including the development of researchable questions, designing an inquiry plan, data collection, and data analysis. In addition, the center produces research targeted at understanding and implementing meaningful staff development for school improvement.

Each April, CSI sponsors an annual Teaching, Inquiry, and Innovation Showcase where school practitioners from across Florida share the results of their inquiries and ensuing changes.
