Sample Workshop Description for Lynn Erickson Workshops
Lynn Erickson expands our understanding of the conceptual level of knowledge, thinking, and understanding. In this highly interactive session, Dr. Erickson will challenge your mind as she contrasts a three-dimensional concept-based curriculum and instruction model with the worn out two-dimensional coverage model. You will see a DVD clip of a three-dimensional, concept-based teacher instructing students. You will learn specific instructional strategies that engage the hearts and minds of students. And you will learn answers to questions like these:
- How is knowledge structured and how does that relate to classroom instruction?
- What is a conceptual lens and how is it used to develop higher levels of thinking and increased motivation for learning?
- How can we design instruction to achieve synergistic thinking between the factual and conceptual levels of knowledge and understanding?
- Why do too many students lose motivation for learning the higher they go in the grade levels and how does conceptual thinking increase motivation?
- How do we "scaffold" thinking to deeper levels?
- How do we develop guiding and essential questions to path student thinking from the factual to the conceptual level of understanding?
- What does concept-based instruction "look like" in the classroom?
Institutes
Dear Colleagues,
Following a marvelous career of 40 years in education, I am facing the realization that I will likely be leaving the work to younger folks sometime within the next five years. Naturally I am concerned about leaving a passionate cadre of people to carry on my life's work. Therefore, I am going to hold a seven-day institute in the summer of 2009 (June 22-28) to begin certifying educators as expert trainers of Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction. The institute will be held in beautiful Whitefish, MT, at a quality accommodation—Grouse Mountain Lodge. Please contact Lynn Erickson (lynn.erickson@comcast.net) for details of the training, criteria for applying, and costs.
I will have four specialists present, whom I already certified, to provide additional focused training during the week, in the areas of Mathematics, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, and Science. There will only be 25 slots available—5 for each of the core areas previously mentioned, and 5 for generalists who work across subject areas. The slots will be filled based on the application information, and recommendations on the applicant's presentation skills.
School districts may submit more than one application if they wish and the applicants can be elementary focused, secondary focused, or both. Participants may elect to apply as individuals to be certified as independent consultants.
