'This second edition, fully updated in line with the EYFS, has been written to help practitioners to create playful contexts to support children's independent mathematical play and learning. It provides ideas and activities but also guides the reader to sources of further information to consolidate their own subject knowledge of mathematics...The emphasis in the text and in the examples provided in this well-illustrated, informative and very practical book is on children aged from four to eight years old. This makes Mathematics Through Play in the Early Years particularly useful for students and teachers of children in Reception classes and at Key Stage 1' -

Praise for the first edition:
'This is a very welcome book. Kate Tucker is an enthusiast, with lots of experience in teaching young children, and in thinking about how best they should learn maths' - Nursery World
Super cross-curricular feel well suited to Early Years. I like the descriptions of the work of particular children. Nice page layout and reasonable size font - occasionally a bit list orientated.

Mathematics team have adopted other texts but I have added this as a supplementary for those who are less confident EY practitioners. For those without nursery practice I think it will be a real confidence booster

A clear and concise text that focuses on the relevant key issues. This book provides practical advice and supports CPD for early years practitioners. It relates well to recent research and makes clear links to show how this can be interpreted within the setting. It would be nice to see more consideration of the 0-2 age group.

This book will be a welcome addition to my reading list for students this year. I often find that practitioners in the Early years find mathematics a challenge. This book gives some excellent examples of how teachers can develop children's problem solving skills and knowledge of the foundations of mathematics. Very informative and easy to follow.

I have used this book since I started working at the University of Exeter and it has always been essential reading for both the EY and Primary PGCE students. Filled with excellent ideas and so easy to read it underpins all that I teach in terms of EY mathematics being purposeful, playful and fun. This text will continue to be essential reading for next years cohort- Sept 11
